Dirt

potatoes

I just finished watching the documentary Dirt! The Movie about the destruction of the earth's living skin... the dirt. It's a wonderful film that takes you all around the world talking about how dirt is a living breathing entity and how it is essential to our lives. Scientists, professors, farmers and others share with you all the different ways that dirt is used and abused. From the traditional earthen homes that are still built today and the important part dirt plays in many cultures to how 1/3 of the earth's soil has been lost in the last one hundred years. I love what one of the farmers said... Sometimes he feels like a father to the soil as he takes care of it. Other times he feels like the soil is his mother as she provides food for him and at times he feels he is in a relationship as they 'care' for each other :)

It's definitely an eye opening view to how agriculture has ravaged the soil over the years with the practice of monoculture planting which leads to massive pest infestations and heavy pesticide use that kills the vital microorganisms in the soil. All this leads to sick soil and the overuse of nitrogen fertilizers which in turn have adverse effects on the surrounding life.

But of course these aren't the only things that are harming the soil that we have left. It also touches on strip mining, desertification and more, but the movie isn't all doom and gloom! There is so much good going on around us as others try to replenish the earth's dirt :)

In Los Angeles an organization called Tree People has a goal to plant one million trees in the city. Schools are tearing up the concrete and blacktop that surrounds their buildings creating green space and student gardens. I thought it was quite interesting as at one point they mentioned that some people were concerned that without all of the concrete play areas at the school, where would the children play?? Have we really become this disconnected with what is below our feet?

Even though we get out in the garden every year using organic methods, compost and recycle what we can I still watched with my children as I thought it was a great way to really get them thinking more about how important it is that we treat mother earth well :)

Even if you think the problem is just to big and there is nothing you can do to fix it, you can! I love this short little animated folktale by Dr. Wangari Maathai below. It tells of a forest fire and a little tiny hummingbird that felt he just had to do something to stop the fire. As the other animals of the forest helplessly looked on they tell the hummingbird that he is just to small to do anything as he takes one drop of water at a time and drops it on the fire. So he turns to them and says "I am doing... the best... that I can". So simple and so smart. Let's all be hummingbirds together and do the best that we can :)

Happy Earth Hour

2010 Earth Hour

I hope everyone had fun taking part in this years Earth Hour!!

2010 Earth Hour

We had our luminary jars all ready to go and as soon as it was 8:30pm we plunged ourselves into darkness. What a hoot *grin*. We have plenty of power outages throughout the winter but for some reason it's just more fun for the kids when we do it on purpose :)

A blogging friend of mine had mentioned that it would be neat to put the year on our luminaries and make a collection out of them and I thought that was a fantastic idea! So I changed our Earth Hour jar and added '2010' to it :)

I would have loved to see some of the different monuments and cities around the world go dark but for now I will have to settle for watching this years official Earth Hour video :) If you haven't seen it take a moment and check it out, it's really neat to see. Also hop over to the Earth Hour flickr group and see what everyone is sharing from tonight.

If you've blogged about your Earth Hour I know my children would love to see it :)

Earth Hour ~ Luminary Jars

Luminary Jars

With earth hour happening this Saturday, March 27th at 8:30pm I thought that it would be fun to do something special with the kids as we get ready to join the rest of the globe by shutting off our lights for one hour :)

Luminary Jars

So we decided that the perfect way to celebrate would be to make luminary jars with an earth hour theme :) We brainstormed and came up with a couple of perfect ideas. An earth inside a heart because we need to show our love for the earth, a light bulb with the earth inside to symbolize the purpose of earth hour by turning out the lights and a plain jar that we completely blacked out with paint and only the words 'earth hour' unpainted so that when we light it on Saturday the name will glow brightly in the dark :)

Luminary Jars

This is such an easy craft and who doesn't just love to finger paint with glue?!

Armed with colored tissue and crepe paper, empty glass jars with their labels removed and a big bottle of white glue we got started. I would recommend getting each child to pick out what colors they're going to use and tear them into chunks before starting to glue to minimize the amount of paper that may get stuck to their fingers *grin*. After that let them go hog wild! LOL.

Luminary Jars

This has to be the easiest craft and perfect for all ages. Even the littlest hands can slap paper onto glue :) My four year old created this lovely red luminary and he was so enthused that he even glued and papered the underside of his glass jar *grin*.

We've set them aside to let them fully dry and are now anxiously awaiting Saturday evening so that we can light little candles inside the jars and watch them glow in the dark :)

You've still got time to make some to! Have fun and don't forget to turn off the lights :)

How Crunchy Are You?

Bi-weekly batch of granola, originally uploaded by ahemler.

Definition: crunch·y ma·ma
adj. crunch·i·er, crunch·i·est

Mother who supports homebirth, breastfeeding, baby wearing, cloth diapering, co-sleeping, gentle discipline, etc. One who questions established medical authority; tends to be vegetarian and/or prepare all-organic foods.

Haha, I love this definition! I consider myself to be crunchy. Not uber crunchy but enough to make a good crashing sound when you chew *grin*.

I ran across a great quiz the other day entitled 'How Crunchy Are You?' and it asks questions about homeschooling, vaccinating, co-sleeping, diapering, personal products and more, so I thought I'd see just how crunchy I really am.

I scored 149 making me a Super Nutty, Ultra-Crunchy, Granola Earth Mama :) Wow, I didn't realize I'd score so high but I have to admit I'd like to be even more crunchy. Hubby says I've got the 'super nutty' part down pat and if I go any further he may have to commit me to the rubber room! LOL

Check out the quiz here and let me know how you score. I'd love to know :)

Flickr Favorites ~ Moss

1. The Toadstool's Secret Terrarium, 2. Birdie Abode, 3. Fairy Homes, 4. Tiny Homes For Gnomes

I have been collecting moss and tiny clay mushrooms to make my own little mossy terrarium haven and these photos are so inspiring. Just look, acorn gnome houses... fantastic!!

I am craving vibrant greens, the sweet earthy smell of forest mosses, and the peaceful feeling that nature evokes in oneself. My little terrarium is going to bring that bright spark of the outdoors in :)
